URN at the International Conference on Urban Risks (ICUR 2016)
October 11, 2016
URN researchers had a key role at the International Conference on Urban Risks, which was held in Lisbon, Portugal, in the period 30 June to 2 July, 2016.
After an opening address by Paola Albrito, Head of the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) Regional Office for Europe, the conference split into seven themes.
URN researcher Jessica Lamond (UWE) co-convened a session on risk mitigation that contained papers on diverse urban risks to infrastructure and communities including flooding, seismic risk and air pollution.
Jessica Lamond also represented herself, and Ibidun Adelekan (University of Ibadan), in presenting the paper Mitigation of Climate Risks through Adaptation and Urban Management in Nigerian Cities, arguing for the importance of considering the local urbanisation factors along with varying climatic circumstances when designing for future climate resilience in Nigeria.
