Rural-urban linkages in the Benue Basin
June 1, 2016
The research team at the Department of Urban and Regional Planning of the Benue State University (BSU) in Makurdi is making good progress in their study on Rural-Urban Linkages in the Benue Basin.
The Benue Basin, a vast area covering significant parts of the North Central and North East of Nigeria, from Lokoja through Makurdi, Katsina-Ala, Wukari, Jalingo, Numan to Yola, is an under-studied region that produces a significant proportion of Nigeria’s food. In recent years, incidences of herder-farmer and communal crises have increased, which have also had an impact on the morphology and structure of urban and rural settlements in the region.
The research aims to understand rural-urban production systems, population flows and mobility, transportation networks, and social inter-relationships between urban centres in the Benue Basin, in the context of climate change and security concerns.
